Citrus fruit peels hold some amazing nutrient properties and they don’t belong anywhere near a garbage can. Whenever trying to use the peels of any citrus fruit such as oranges, try to buy organically-grown, especially if you plan to eat the peels or use them on your body. Here are 8 incredible health benefits of orange peels.

If you don’t have access to organic oranges, a good cleaning with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 1 cup of water will remove almost any pesticide remaining within the outer peel.

Beneficiary aspects of orange peels come from its essential oils, which have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. Essential oil d-limonene has ability to defuse stomach acids and maintain normal intestinal movements. It also promotes normal liver function.

Almost all the anti-cholesterol compounds in oranges are found in the peels. These compounds help combat the LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol in our bodies that form clots and plaque culminating in clogged heart arteries. Therefore, including orange peels to your diet can lower the total cholesterol levels in the body. Studies have shown that orange peel can dissolve both cholesterol and triglycerides.

It has a flavonoid known as hesperidine, which is said to be effective against colon cancer. Apart from repelling oxygen free radicals that steal oxygen from healthy cells, the chemical compounds in orange peels also help inhibit the growth and division of cancerous cells.
