“Sometimes you’re the teacher…sometimes you’re the student…sometimes you’re the teacher…sometimes you’re the student.” This repetitive message is what I found myself hearing one morning while coming out of a deep slumber and into a more lucid state – also called the twilight or hypnagogic state of awakening.
It happens for me quite often; a period between deep sleep and conscious awareness when the most profound messages will spill forth. Where do they come from? Admittedly, I don’t know.
Though dumbfounded by its origin, I sense that somehow we are wired for reception; we are tethered to a transmission that pours from the depths of the Universe and manages to trickle its way onto the screen of consciousness. Every once-in-a-while we get a glimpse.
Interestingly, it is in these states that it seems we are most receptive to the utmost of our creative aspects – when the fully conscious mind is out of the way!
There are indeed times that I am blessed with the opportunity to harvest these twilight elucidations. They’ll make sense. I’ll be able to apply them to a problem, challenge, or question I might have had a day or two before.
Here’s one example.
I’d been working on a creative project for a client of mine. A design assignment of sorts. I’d been laboring to come up with something appropriate. Something that would perfectly represent her “brand.” I’d pushed the previous day to force the muses to talk or to show me what it was I needed to do.
No matter how hard I tried, the juices just weren’t flowing. Nonetheless, I sat down with “pen to paper” and hoped to get the creative process going. And then I realized, I had to let it go. After all, I had other things to accomplish on this day: write an article, manage the website, produce a show – all the other “stuff” that my conscious world is made of.
I let it go and moved on to something else. I retired to bed. Had a good night’s sleep. Upon awakening – that twilight or hypnagogic state managed to open up the caverns of my consciousness! That precious time between sleep and awake time – that time when non-local information and the height of creativity, knowledge, and wisdom seep through. And when it happened, it came through BIG TIME!
It was literally like somebody took the image of what I needed and flashed it right in front of my eyes in perfect 3D view. I saw it. It was not offered as an option, but as an actualization. And I saw it clearly.
I then got up that morning. Swiftly brewed my morning coffee. Sat down and drew out my (or their) vision. And then I actualized it in what would become a creative form that ultimately my client LOVED! Just like that! It happened. Nothing to be labored over – just received.
But from where?
I’ve spoken many times both publicly as well as in private conversation about the mysteries and wonders of synchronicity, precognition, and the unified field – A field that I am convinced each and every one of us is tethered to. One that can be harnessed to bring forth amazing discoveries, “new” inventions and streams of consciousness that might never have been achieved had we not allowed for the larger stream of information to come in.
As much as I encourage others to mine that stream, admittedly there are times when I confess that the well has run dry for me. Or so it would seem. I’ll then revert to becoming the student again. I’ll go back to the left brained, logical, practical, linear mode of problem solving, which more times than not, doesn’t work. I’ll then ask, seek, and knock on the door of mystical wisdom to reveal itself on demand. And again I realize, only when it is fully ready, the answer will naturally emerge. And just when I fully let it go – something happens. The answer comes. And then I’ll have a realization of how it all works – yet again.
And when it does – the student morphs back into the teacher. A traversable moment!
I’ve imparted this advice to many over the years – encouraging individuals to rely on that omnipresent spark of knowing that resides within us all, but admittedly when it seemed that the well of knowing was running dry for me, I relented. To what? The logical side of course. At least, temporarily. But then I always come back to an understanding…
Sometimes you’re the teacher – sometimes you’re the student, but you’re all-ways connected to The Field of All Knowing! Let go, and you too will see, the wonders of the hypnagogic state.
