The use of crystals and minerals in one’s repertoire of healing has enjoyed a steady growth trajectory in the last decade or so within the modern world. Given its monumental popularity in relatively recent times, we can still look to the past to get a glimpse of its origins as a starting point to understanding that the mineral kingdom has much to offer to us all. But just what do crystals represent to our understanding about what it means to be human and how do they actually work with us?

History, through its events and practices has a way of repeating itself, cycling through periods of activity to dormancy and activity again. There are clearly many accounts throughout the ancient literature that point to the origins of crystals and their uses, ranging from alchemical and occult practices to essential healing of mind, body and spirit – to powering craft to be able to travel the stars, build and move structures and literally materialize things and circumstances through its magical ways. The Atlanteans and Lemurians, the peoples of ancient Egypt and Sumeria and more, all were said to have utilized the properties of crystals and stones to create and to destroy.

There are many adaptations to these stories and as many authors who have documented the historical use of these gems throughout the centuries. And now with history under our belt, plus a couple hundred years of science to at least intimate a justification of its efficacy, not to mention a burgeoning consciousness movement rocking our world, crystals have made a comeback as a modality to be reckoned with.

Despite the informational virility on how to use crystals; authors and self described experts that have seemingly come out of the woodwork to give the prescriptive edict on the use of crystals, one must use an ample amount of discernment and subjective guidance if one is to gain maximum effect from these still mysterious pieces of nature.

Although I do not profess expertise in the traditional sense, I have nonetheless been involved with and intrigued by the mineral kingdom, frankly since childhood. Whether it was picking up stones from the street and boiling them to make “stone soup,” (this was I’m sure a matter of childhood boredom reaching its peak) or a visit as a youngster to the museum of science where I proudly purchased my first collection of essential minerals, mounted on cardboard with a nice little description of each specimen (which I still own and have put away for safe keeping), crystals, minerals and stones have been a central part of my own development.

Having a healthy respect for the scientific method, albeit a still incomplete one, to whatever extent I was afforded the ability to decipher its process, I’ve found scientific justification for how and why crystals work as rather satisfying. There is indeed physics to how they interact with our world, including us, and yet I always make room for the mystery; the energy and consciousness that seem to permeate each crystal, mineral and stone.

Through countless hours of contemplation and practice, I’ve determined that crystals are a very real and fundamental part of our being human and spiritual, and that we are certainly meant to work with and align to their energy in order to align with our own evolutionary process. But as I’ve talked to dozens of people on the practical uses of crystals and stones, I am still rather perplexed about the lack of fundamental understanding as to how and why they work, and further that many that are interested in this modality have relied so heavily on external “how-to’s” vs. revelation through personal exploration – for the latter to me is far more intriguing.

Here are some points I’d like to highlight and share with you on your journey to discovering effective ways to bring crystals into your life. Some have been purely experimental and some are derived from a few essential points as conveyed by who I believe to be among the “true crystal experts”, Naisha Ahsian. That said, I do not advocate that one solely adhere to any one person’s perspective, for in so doing we may negate the true messages that crystals are trying to convey to us individually.

The Electromagnetic Energy Field (EME)

Quite simply from a scientific perspective, crystals and minerals are electromagnetic oscillators. They are packets of energy that move at varying frequencies and interact according to those similar frequencies that they come into contact with, whether it be a television or stereo, table lamp or clock radio or you! All of the aforementioned carry their own EME and depending on the strength of their frequency will determine where and how the crystal will vibrate. We know through the use of quartz crystals, certain technologies benefit from their function of stability and amplification.

The Human Electromagnetic Energy Field

Thus far, it has been determined that each of us has our own distinct EME field which is often referred to as our aura and it reaches roughly 12 feet out from our physical bodies. However, it has also been found that our physical heart is much stronger electromagnetically than our brain and thus serves as our largest processor of EME. When we bring a crystal within the EME field of our bodies, safely within 4 or so feet, the crystal’s EME (depending on its own unique properties) will begin to resonate with our own, be processed first by our physical heart, then by our nervous system which then transmits information to our brain, which then gives us conscious references to interpret the information via emotions, physical sensations, memories and the like.

To illustrate this point further, let us use the analogy of a tuning fork. When you have a pair of tuning forks and one is clearly emitting a sound or vibration that is louder than the other, by default the weaker of the two will fall into resonance with the louder and the two will begin oscillating together according to the frequency of the dominant energy.

Assuming that we then are a biological tuning fork and the crystal acting as a tuning fork as well, the same process will occur when we come into each other’s EME field. In some cases if the energy being emitted from the crystal is stronger, we will fall into resonance with it and thus process its base resonant frequency, where we may benefit from its native attributes. It’s key to remember that these attributes will bring up like attributes of our own, whether they carry the frequency of love or fear, joy or sorrow, healing or dis-ease.

Conversely, if our EME field at a given time is extremely strong or loud via intense emotions of love or rage, for instance, the crystal will be inclined to resonate with that dominant energy. Remember the heart, which is our feeling center is the primary carrier of these signals electromagnetically and thus will be received by the crystal.

As much as many are tempted to assign these otherwise mysterious entanglements of human and crystal to magical lore, one must realize that these are merely central to the scientific method as it is known thus far. Although this may not explain the whole process as to how and why crystals work, it is nonetheless a good starting point, and one that might lead to further explanation of something we call intuition.

Crystals and Intuition

It is now well accepted that the brain processes in excess of 30 billion bits of information every second, most of which is unconscious.

Merely 5-9 bits are processed on a conscious level relegating the balance to the unconscious processing mechanism some have called our intuition. This means that only a tiny fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum is consciously processed, leaving a surplus of information yet to be assimilated.

Relative to choosing crystals and stones to work with, one must learn to tap their intuition rather than that of a book or course to learn which stone is best for them on any given issue.

Here’s what Naisha Ahsian had to say about choosing crystals and intuition in a 2009 interview.

“(Crystals and stones) vibrate with different frequency sets within the electromagnetic spectrum. By using the physical law of resonance to engage that frequency, it unlocks certain knowings, certain references and certain feelings within our selves. Crystals and stones are not most effective when used prescriptively (amethyst is for this, or citrine is for that, etc.), they are most effective when you are able to choose a stone that vibrationally resonates with the issue that you are exploring or the imbalance that you are attempting to heal. And that may be a completely different stone for you than it would be for me.

Intuition is huge, especially when it comes to choosing stones. (You must learn to) take your head out of the process.” Putting this into practice, she goes on to say, “Let’s say you have an issue – like a relationship problem. What you do is you actually feel that problem within you, emotionally – just feel it! How does it make you feel? And then what you do is go to your stones or go to a stone store and you try to allow yourself to be drawn to that stone that is calling your attention. What is really going on there is that nature is trying to find resonance between your energy and the energy of a stone that will resonate with that issue or problem that you are dealing with. So when you’re choosing stones intuitively, you are actually utilizing a much larger part of your energy systems than if you try to choose them consciously (or by looking up a general meaning in a book).” In other words, put the book away!!

Ahsian has said however, and I tend to concur, that books can serve an important purpose at the right time. There are some wonderful reference books on crystals, minerals and stones and by all means, I encourage you to thumb through some of them. The point is to not relegate the “how to” to books or others as the final say on what crystal works with what, but to discover the relationship that you have with the crystals for yourself. In fact, at the end of part two, I will list several reference books that have been quite essential to my journey through the mineral kingdom!

As a footnote, I must say that the most incredible part of my journey in working with crystals and stones is that by engaging my intuition to choose stones, that process in and of itself has strengthened my intuitive “muscle” generally speaking. Then the application of using intuition across all areas of your life becomes a more natural and more readily utilized process!
