What if the voices of our loved ones don’t fall silent when they leave this world? What if, in moments when we least expect it, they reach back through the signals of a phone line — reminding us that connection doesn’t end with death?
For decades, researchers and experiencers alike have reported that the spirit world seems to favor technology as a channel of communication. From the early days of EVP—Electronic Voice Phenomena, where mysterious voices were captured on tape recorders—to modern experiments in ITC (Instrumental Trans-Communication), discarnate presences have been known to bend frequencies, signals, and static to make themselves heard. Phones, radios, televisions, even computers have all, at one time or another, become conduits for messages that defy logical explanation.
And in more recent years, the rise of the Spirit Box—a device that rapidly scans radio frequencies to create a stream of white noise—has become a popular tool among paranormal investigators. Entire YouTube channels are now dedicated to Spirit Box sessions, where voices are said to cut through the noise in direct response to questions. Influencers like Dalen Spratt, known for exploring these modern techniques, have helped bring this form of spirit communication into mainstream awareness.
If we think about it, it makes sense: these are devices built to transmit voices and signals. Perhaps the “other side” simply uses what’s already familiar to us, slipping through the gaps in our circuitry to remind us they’re still very much present.
“Mom” on the Caller ID
Not long after my mother-in-law passed, something deeply puzzling happened. My husband and I had just returned home, and as I usually would do, I checked the caller ID log on our landline. That’s when I froze: the word “Mom” appeared on the screen, along with her old cell phone number.
The problem? That number had been disconnected long before she died. And to make it stranger, our landline system never displayed a caller’s name from a cell number — it simply wasn’t designed to do that. Yet there it was, unmistakably: Mom.
The phone never rang. There was no voicemail. Just a silent entry in the call log, as though a message had slipped through some unseen channel.
What struck me most was the sense that this wasn’t random. My mother-in-law knew I had spent years writing and researching the subject of life after death, along with other topics surrounding the paranormal, and we had often talked about these things. It made sense that if she were to send a signal, she would send it to our house — to the ones most likely to recognize it for what it was, rather than dismiss it as coincidence. In fact, when we called my husband’s sister to confirm it was indeed their mom’s old number, she was skeptical, brushing it off as some odd fluke. But for us, it carried weight.
In that moment, the call log became more than a technical anomaly. It felt like her way of saying, I’m still here. I know you’ll understand.
Why don’t you just pick up the phone and call?
Consciousness researcher Susan Manewich is a close friend, colleague and longtime experiencer who once shared with me how her father — who passed many years ago — chose a very unusual way to reach her. Their bond had always been strong, filled with humor and a promise that he’d “come back and haunt everyone” after he crossed over.
One morning, during what Susan later confirmed was a geomagnetic storm, she woke with a distinct sensation that the solar activity was “hitting.” In that liminal space between sleep and wakefulness, she heard her father’s voice as clearly as if he were in the room. With his familiar wit, he asked, “How come nobody calls me?”
Startled but listening, Susan realized what he meant. Her father’s message wasn’t just clever wordplay. The metaphor of “picking up the phone” struck Susan deeply, because it echoed the very medium so many of us associate with contact — the phone as a lifeline, both literal and symbolic. And in her case, it wasn’t only about technology, but timing. He made it clear that solar storms themselves could act as the “signal boost” for calls across the veil.
This idea of solar activity amplifying psychic connection isn’t just anecdotal. It was unmistakable. A voice that sounded eerily like her father’s came through: “Lisa, is that you? Lisa, I’m here, I’m here.”
Just as quickly as it began, the voice faded and the call with her sister resumed as if nothing had happened.
Shocked and shaken, Lisa and her sister were left staring at the impossible. Had their father just reached across the boundary of death to make contact? If so, then the question wasn’t whether he was still alive — but in what form.
Closing Reflections: Why the Phone?
Across these stories, one thing becomes clear: the phone — whether through caller ID, a storm-timed metaphor, or a sudden interruption — becomes more than just a device. It turns into a bridge. A symbol of connection that refuses to be severed, even when life itself comes to an end.
Maybe that’s why so many after-death communications seem to “piggyback” on technology. Phones are designed to carry voices across distance, so is it any surprise that sometimes they carry them across worlds?
But here’s the deeper truth: whether it’s a flicker of static, a synchronicity timed with a solar storm, or a voice breaking through a call, these moments remind us that the boundary between this world and the next is thinner than we think. Maybe it doesn’t exist at all.
